The United States of Africa

This collage was inspired by author Milton J. Davis's "Playing the Odds," an Afrofuturist short animated film that imagines Atlanta as the center of an all-Black cyberpunk future. The artist asks: what would the United States look like if it had been colonized by Africans rather than Europeans? What better futures might we have gained more quickly without the horrifying history of chattel slavery? The collage blends past, present, and future by including references to African design and art traditions, modern-day urban imagery, and future-oriented, science-fictional technologies.
