Overview
Dr. Philip Auslander was appointed to the Georgia Tech faculty in 1987 and has been a Professor in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication since 1999. He holds the PhD in Theatre from Cornell University. Dr. Auslander teaches primarily in the areas of Performance Studies, Popular Musicology, and the places where these disciplines intersect. He also teaches a Film Acting Workshop on an annual basis. He is interested in the performance of gender identity, the relationship between performance and media, and the documentation of performance. He has published eight books, the most recent of which are the third edition of Liveness: Performance in a Mediatized Culture (Routledge, 2023), In Concert: Performing Musical Persona (University of Michigan, 2021) and Reactivations: Essays on Performance and Its Documentation (University of Michigan 2018). His earlier works include Presence and Resistance: Postmodernism and Cultural Politics in Contemporary American Performance (University of Michigan, 1992), From Acting to Performance: Essays in Modernism and Postmodernism (Routledge, 1997), Liveness: Performance in a Mediatized Culture (Routledge, 1999; second edition in 2008), and Performing Glam Rock: Gender and Theatricality in Popular Music (University of Michigan, 2006). He received the prestigious Callaway Prize for the Best Book in Theatre or Drama for Liveness, which will appear in a third edition early in 2023. He is currently working on a trade book on women musicians in rock and popular music, also scheduled to appear in 2023. Dr. Auslander has worked as a freelance art writer who contributed art criticism to ArtForum International Magazine for ten years and has written catalog essays for museums in the US and Europe. Dr. Auslander is active in LMC’s film production unit, teaching an annual course on acting for the screen. In 2018-19, he produced a short film, “Dr. Blues,” which he also wrote and acted in, on the Georgia Tech campus involving student crew members and actors, faculty, and local film professionals. The film premiered at the Peachtree Village International Film Festival in 2019 and has been screened in Europe.
